Internship Program Application 2012
During July and August, the beautiful Berkshire Hills will once again be home to The Berkshire Fringe Internship Program. Because our organization is small, our interns are an integral part of making The Berkshire Fringe happen. They work hands-on with all staff members, including the Artistic Directors and Technical Director.
Berkshire Fringe interns are intensely involved at the highest level behind the scenes and work directly with the professional actors, musicians, directors, technicians, designers, administrators and other diverse theater professionals at the festival.
Performance and Technical Theater concentrations will give you experience in the areas of theater you are most interested in. Performance interns take numerous artist-lead workshops, create a devised-theater piece under the guidance of the Artistic Directors, act as an assistant stage manager for one resident company, and will mentor with one of the Artistic Directors. Technical interns work side-by-side with our tech staff all summer, learn to run lights and sound for some productions and also participate in our mentorship program.
Technical Theater Concentration
Technical Theater Interns specifically have the chance to work intimately with the Technical Director and Production Manager. There are many learning opportunities, including:
- Assistant stage managing
- Creating a flexible and creative festival lighting plot
- Successfully managing production change-overs in a fast-paced festival environment
- Programming and using lighting and sound boards
Performance Concentration
Performance Interns specifically have the opportunity to work with a professional director and participate in the EarlyStages readings presented at The Berkshire Fringe. They will:
- Work under the guidance of the Artistic Directors to create and perform an original piece of devised theater.
- Assistant stage manage for one resident company at the Berkshire Fringe and observe their creative process as they develop a new piece of theater.
- Participate in various Workshop Series lead by artists participating in The Berkshire Fringe
Additional Program Info
Timeline:
- Application Deadline: Rolling. Positions will be filled as applications from appropriate candidates are received.
- Program Runs during late July and August of 2011 with specific dates TBA

Mentorships:
All interns are assigned a mentor. Technical Theater interns mentor with the Technical Director. Performance Interns mentor with an Artistic Director. Each intern will have individual meetings with their mentor and will work directly with them on a number of projects. The meetings and individualized working environment give the interns the opportunity to learn one-on-one, ask important questions, manage exciting responsibilities, be involved in the inner workings of the organization, and be an integral part of the artistic community.
- Apartment style housing for all participants
- Partial Board (Lunch on Monday – Friday of each week, plus some additional meals)
- At least 1 ticket to each Berkshire Fringe production
- Interns who are seeking credit from their college or university are given an in-depth evaluation of their participation
Participants are responsible for:
- Transportation to and from the program
- Most meals (some meals and snacks will be provided by Bazaar Productions).
- Housing includes a full kitchen where students will be able to store food and prepare meals.
Application Process:
Four participants (3 performance, 1 technical theater) will be hand chosen by the Artistic Directors of Bazaar Productions from an open application process. Applicants are accepted from anywhere, but we focus our energy on students who reside or attend school in Berkshire County or the surrounding counties. Applicants are required to submit a statement of purpose describing their objectives for interning at The Berkshire Fringe, a one page synopsis or resume detailing their experience in theater, and one letter of recommendation from a teacher or theater professional. Selected applicants then interview with one of the Artistic Directors.
