Close-cropped harmonies and unrestrained ukulele strumming produce a highly original sound. Their sets boast something from every era, ranging from Mozart to Radiohead, all of which benefit from fresh arrangements and a vocal delivery with tongues buried firmly in cheeks. Nothing is sacred in the Ladies’ quest for suitable material. Members include songwriter and educators Bernice Lewis and Berni McMahon, as well as surprise guests.
Guitarist/composer Alexander Turnquist uses the haunting sound of the 12 string acoustic and a unique finger-style approach to create mesmerizing music that is hard to believe is coming from a single instrument.
Based in Hudson, NY, Turnquist has toured extensively throughout the United States and in Europe. He has released numerous solo albums on VHF records, including the recent full length "Hallway of Mirrors" whose compositions are heavily patterned, completely acoustic and driven with a concise energy.
The Oracle Hysterical is part band, part book club, specializing in unusual cross-genre retellings and reinventions of literature. They will perform a collection of songs written during a year-long obsession with the Grimm's Fairy Tales. At turns humorous and grizzly, these songs evoke the Black Forest in the band's unusual signature sound, the dark warmth of viola da gamba, bassoon, harmonium and guitar.
Powered by Elliot Cole's detailed arrangements, this group's sound draws on an extremely diverse array of musical influences, including the precision and instrumentation of the Baroque, the surprising harmonies of contemporary classical and jazz, and the lush molodicism of today's singer/songwriters.
Brad Balliett (bassoon), Doug Balliett (bass/gamba), Alison Fletcher (voice), Geremy Schulick (guitar), Elliot Cole (harmonium/voice).
